How to deal with damp in walls

Check your chimney

Check your chimney

Chimneys are exposed to wind, rain, and flue gases, all of which can cause the stone and joints to deteriorate, letting in water. But they also play a useful role in keeping a property well ventilated.

Letting traditional buildings breathe is a big part of preventing damp problems. Chimneys and flues shouldn’t be blocked off because they’re not in use. Adding a ventilated chimney cap and leaving the hearth open will enable a through-flow of air.

Woodbeetle infestation, dry rot and wet rot outbreaks can all occur if moisture levels inside a property are allowed to increase.
