Signal Boxes
In 2013-15, Historic Environment Scotland worked with Network Rail to review Scotland’s signal boxes as their functional role in railway use draws to a close.
We reviewed 140 signal boxes, 74 of which were operational at the time of the review and 35 of which were listed buildings. As a result of the project, an additional 6 signal boxes were listed and associated station and signal box listed building records were revised and updated.
The review has ensured that the best examples of signal boxes have been recognised through listing with examples dating from the late nineteenth century through to the era of the post-war nationalisation of the railways. There are now 42 listed signal boxes in Scotland.
